NY Agencies Compete for the Kontera Kup

Go Team! Kontera’s Sara Press and GraceAnn Bafna.
Bringing eight of New York’s most prolific ad agencies together into a head-to-head ‘Amazing Race’ style competition, the inaugural Kontera Pub Krawl was held recently around Manhattan’s East Village. It combined the traditional pub crawl – a night of group bar-hopping – with an inebriated scavenger hunt. The ultimate objective of the evening was to get your name etched on the prestigious Kontera Kup, an award bestowed upon the winning team.
To kick off the competition, all teams were given a series of cryptic clues to locate 6 unknown locations. In order to advance to the next bar, each team had to successfully complete a semi-blind puzzle, answer a series of trivia questions (does anyone know how old “The Situation” really is?), compete in a March Madness style ping pong tournament, and complete an obstacle course that tested the team’s impaired motor skills (we weren’t going to make it easy!).
Off in the Maxus Lobby struggles through some early penalties
By the final challenge, it appeared as though Maxus had built an insurmountable lead, but competition was fierce and several lead changes later, Media Vest’s Poverty Elite clinched the Kontera Kup, winning the 2010 Kontera Pub Krawl Champion title!
Following the competition, all of the teams, cheerleaders and local agency representatives celebrated at the Finish Line Party where guests were treated to a live performance by The Lesser Ghost. Winners were announced and Poverty Elite was awarded the Kontera Kup by emcee and Kontera VP of Sales Chris Karl, followed by a champagne toast. It was an evening that will not soon be forgotten!

Thank you to the all those who participated, cheered and danced the night away. It was great to have representation from agencies across the city including, Mindshare, Mediacom, Universal McCann, MediaVest, Neo@Ogilvy, MEC, Maxus, Wieden and Kennedy, Media Contacts, and Initiative, celebrate and enjoy the festivities.

Getting to know Laliv Hadar: An Interview with Kontera’s Senior Manager of Advertiser Marketing

LalivHaving worked for over 10 years in online marketing at such companies as Yahoo! and AOL Time Warner, Laliv Hadar brings a wealth of experience to her role as the Senior Manager of Advertiser Marketing at Kontera. As October marks her one year anniversary of joining Kontera, we thought we’d take the opportunity to catch up with Laliv and discuss her valuable contributions to our Marketing and Sales Departments.
Please describe your role in the company:
The creation of marketing tools and resources primarily for the use of the Advertising Sales group.
What excites you the most about your job?
Personally, I like that it combines creativity with strategic business thinking and skills. In terms of the contribution to the company, the goal is that my work product has a direct effect on the sales force, giving the field more tools and resources with which to sell, to ultimately drive more revenue for the company.
What projects have you worked on recently that you’re the most proud of?
Some recent projects include Kontera’s market launch where we announced new features to our technology, the Kontera Synapse, and released exciting results of a comScore study that showed the advantages of Kontera In-Text advertising to both advertisers and consumers. Before that, a big project that I led was a redesign to the advertiser section of the Kontera website, which included the launch of a new Ad Gallery featuring some of Kontera’s best in class advertising units.
In your interactions with Advertisers and Ad Agencies, what do you find they respond to the most about Kontera?
I have heard from advertisers and from our internal sales force that we perform well and, thus, we have high retention and renewal rates with clients. Clients also seem to appreciate the breadth and depth of our creative and custom solutions – delivering a unique creative and technical end-to-end solution to support their messaging and their brand.
What about Kontera differentiates it from other In-Text / Advertising solutions?
Our technology is superior, which is shown through our solid campaign performance.

Almost every entrepreneur (or anyone who aspires to be one) has so many misconceptions about business it's scary.
It's scary because these mistaken thoughts, false beliefs, and flawed points of view are certain to castrate and shackle a business before it ever gets off the ground.
That's why so few businesses ever succeed, and of those that do succeed, only a fraction of their owners ever break free of them.
Today, I'm going to show you one way to differentiate yourself forever from the hordes of wannabe-moneymakers who never truly succeed. This first step can help you become a true business visionary - and join the ranks of the world's most successful entrepreneurs. I call this type of high-ranking success seeker a "Founder."
The first rule of becoming a Founder is:
You Don't Buy Opportunities - You Create Them
Lots of wannabe entrepreneurs are in a constant search for the hot opportunity.
The type of opportunity they're looking for at any given moment in time is determined by where they are in the evolution of their business.
If they're just starting out - they're searching for the hot business opportunity. You know, the perfect niche, the best business in a box, or the new untapped method to making millions.
If they already have an online business - they're searching for the hot traffic opportunity, the killer conversion strategy, or anything else that promises the secret shortcut to eliminating what's currently holding them back.
Their thinking being - I'd imagine - that people who are successful in business are successful because they know something that everyone else doesn't. That somehow, they know how to be there at the right time... Picking the right thing to do before anyone else knows about it...
In other words, what most Internet marketers seem to believe about successful entrepreneurs is that they're opportunists. That they're successful because they can smell opportunity before anyone else can. That they can jump on the "new hot thing" before anyone else gets wind of it. You know... the hot deal, the cutting-edge thing, the inside track, the search engine loophole, the backdoor pay-per-click bidding strategy, the social media strategy that never fails, etc...
And many Internet marketers and wannabe entrepreneurs are willing to pay anything to get their hands on that hot idea or strategy... Just because they think it's the "easy way" to making millions.
The Wrong Question to Ask
I've never really trusted the idea that making money is as simple as staking out the hot opportunities and riding them to fame and fortune.
Somehow the question "where's the hot opportunity?" smacks of naïveté. Even worse, it smacks of greed.
It's the kind of question asked by people who have never really had to, nor been willing to, pay the price necessary to create an opportunity of their own.
Somehow these opportunity-seeking entrepreneurs have grown to believe that there are nuggets of success hiding out there in the world under rocks. That all they have to do is know which rock to turn over... And the nugget will be theirs.
They believe that success is just a matter of knowing which rock to turn over! That out there in the world is a sure thing just waiting to be discovered. And that an entrepreneur is someone who has a nose for discovering such sure things.
In other words, the thinking goes... Sure things are what success is made of... Find a sure thing and your success is assured.
Founders Are Visionaries, Not Opportunists
My answer to these people has always been the same. The most successful entrepreneurs I know aren't opportunists. The most successful entrepreneurs I know are visionaries.
Now, let me be clear... Visionaries look for opportunities, too. But the big difference is in the type of opportunities they watch for.
Visionaries don't look for opportunities to do something different than everyone else is doing...
They see the hot opportunity in doing what everyone else is doing but doing it better than everyone else is doing it.
So, if Founders are visionaries, what exactly do they see?
Founders see opportunities to make others' lives better, easier, and more enjoyable.
The world isn't a perfect place. All of the imperfections that make this world less than ideal are opportunities to build a business. And not just a business that squeezes as much money out of people as possible in the fastest time possible... But a business that makes a difference in the world by making a difference in the lives of its potential customers.
But understand what I said. The opportunity that launches a business isn't about making YOUR life better (although it will get better if you grasp this). The opportunity is to make SOMEONE ELSE'S life better. That someone else is your potential customer. You want to serve his or her desires better than anyone has ever done before. Only when you do that can you get everything that you want.
And this is the rule that's most often violated with all the different opportunities presented online. They claim that somehow you'll benefit even though no one else in the world does. Of course, real life doesn't work that way.
It All Starts With a Vision
Choose an ordinary business... A business where there's lots of competition. Where there are lots of other people doing it like most people do business. In an ordinary, careless, perfunctory, unresponsive, thoughtless way.
Then design your business to solve a bigger problem, an overlooked frustration, or the same problem as everyone else but solved in better, faster, more convenient, or cheaper way. And then do that business like crazy. I mean whole hog plus the postage. Do that business like no one else has ever done it before you.
Choose an ordinary business and do that business in an extraordinary way. You'll have the hottest business opportunity around.
All it takes to build an extraordinary business is the knowledge, the will, the skill, and the plain old durability needed to weather the resistance you'll meet on the way. The resistance from the world and the people in it who simply don't want to do the work necessary to create a business that works. And the resistance from that lazy inner part of yourself who simply doesn't want to rise to the occasion.
When it comes down to it, pushing the ordinary into the extraordinary is about the only hot opportunity around. Ingenuity and work are what it takes to make your business happen. For you, for your family, for your customers, for the people who work for you. It's about thinking in a totally new and original way. It's about thinking like a Founder.
Start thinking like a Founder, and you'll be able to help but see opportunities. Because they are all around us... Every time you see a condition that is just dying to be fixed, or changed, or reinvented, or transformed... Anytime you see a problem that cries out to be solved... Or a desire that craves fulfillment... Know that right there you have found the seeds to a great business.

"Rich, can you talk about what you're up to?
I noticed you've been sort of in quiet mode for a while."

Rich's Answer: "I have been quiet. And part of it is because I've been working on a bunch of new things.
The other part is that I made a decision about a year and a half ago... That the idea of doing product launches to stay in business was not really my goal in life.
Because I think that long term, whether it lasts for another year or two or ten... At some point, that model will become stale. And if I don't have a business where a launch is just icing on the cake, then I really don't have a business.
So, I've gone more in the direction of building sustainability.
That doesn't mean we won't do launches. We will.
But we haven't done one in a while. It's been longer than we've ever gone without a launch. That's primarily because we've been working on stuff that brings in money day-in, day-out... regardless of whether we're making a big to do.
There is another big thing that I'm working on. Then all of a sudden I might be more active in the market. Because I've been trying to crack this one thing for quite a while and I'm getting very, very close. It revolves around a different way of marketing than what's being done now. A different way of delivering content than is being done now. And everything about it is different than what's current.
That's what I've been working on. That's what I love doing.
Our business right now is already more sustainable. We're able to grow without the launches. Which gives me a lot more latitude and flexibility to do the things I want to do most... which still drive the business, but not with the same pressure or necessity.
I'm not forecasting the end of launches. But there will be a day where that model is going to fall down. Every model does. It could be ten or twenty years from now. Who knows? It could be next month.
But the time to build a business that's not reliant on product launches is when launches are working and you're still able to make money with them. Because then you have the time to make it work.
That's why I made that decision a little over a year ago. And I've taken a back seat when it comes to being one of the standard players. And that's okay. Because we've been working with other people, and doing bigger deals, that aren't the typical Internet marketing "frenzy" type of deals."

Founders Are Visionaries, Not Opportunists
My answer to these people has always been the same. The most successful entrepreneurs I know aren't opportunists. The most successful entrepreneurs I know are visionaries.
Now, let me be clear... Visionaries look for opportunities, too. But the big difference is in the type of opportunities they watch for.
Visionaries don't look for opportunities to do something different than everyone else is doing...
They see the hot opportunity in doing what everyone else is doing but doing it better than everyone else is doing it.
So, if Founders are visionaries, what exactly do they see?
Founders see opportunities to make others' lives better, easier, and more enjoyable.
The world isn't a perfect place. All of the imperfections that make this world less than ideal are opportunities to build a business. And not just a business that squeezes as much money out of people as possible in the fastest time possible... But a business that makes a difference in the world by making a difference in the lives of its potential customers.
But understand what I said. The opportunity that launches a business isn't about making YOUR life better (although it will get better if you grasp this). The opportunity is to make SOMEONE ELSE'S life better. That someone else is your potential customer. You want to serve his or her desires better than anyone has ever done before. Only when you do that can you get everything that you want.
And this is the rule that's most often violated with all the different opportunities presented online. They claim that somehow you'll benefit even though no one else in the world does. Of course, real life doesn't work that way.
It All Starts With a Vision
Choose an ordinary business... A business where there's lots of competition. Where there are lots of other people doing it like most people do business. In an ordinary, careless, perfunctory, unresponsive, thoughtless way.
Then design your business to solve a bigger problem, an overlooked frustration, or the same problem as everyone else but solved in better, faster, more convenient, or cheaper way. And then do that business like crazy. I mean whole hog plus the postage. Do that business like no one else has ever done it before you.
Choose an ordinary business and do that business in an extraordinary way. You'll have the hottest business opportunity around.
All it takes to build an extraordinary business is the knowledge, the will, the skill, and the plain old durability needed to weather the resistance you'll meet on the way. The resistance from the world and the people in it who simply don't want to do the work necessary to create a business that works. And the resistance from that lazy inner part of yourself who simply doesn't want to rise to the occasion.
When it comes down to it, pushing the ordinary into the extraordinary is about the only hot opportunity around. Ingenuity and work are what it takes to make your business happen. For you, for your family, for your customers, for the people who work for you. It's about thinking in a totally new and original way. It's about thinking like a Founder.
Start thinking like a Founder, and you'll be able to help but see opportunities. Because they are all around us... Every time you see a condition that is just dying to be fixed, or changed, or reinvented, or transformed... Anytime you see a problem that cries out to be solved... Or a desire that craves fulfillment... Know that right there you have found the seeds to a great business.

I noticed you've been sort of in quiet mode for a while."

Rich's Answer: "I have been quiet. And part of it is because I've been working on a bunch of new things.
The other part is that I made a decision about a year and a half ago... That the idea of doing product launches to stay in business was not really my goal in life.
Because I think that long term, whether it lasts for another year or two or ten... At some point, that model will become stale. And if I don't have a business where a launch is just icing on the cake, then I really don't have a business.
So, I've gone more in the direction of building sustainability.
That doesn't mean we won't do launches. We will.
But we haven't done one in a while. It's been longer than we've ever gone without a launch. That's primarily because we've been working on stuff that brings in money day-in, day-out... regardless of whether we're making a big to do.
There is another big thing that I'm working on. Then all of a sudden I might be more active in the market. Because I've been trying to crack this one thing for quite a while and I'm getting very, very close. It revolves around a different way of marketing than what's being done now. A different way of delivering content than is being done now. And everything about it is different than what's current.
That's what I've been working on. That's what I love doing.
Our business right now is already more sustainable. We're able to grow without the launches. Which gives me a lot more latitude and flexibility to do the things I want to do most... which still drive the business, but not with the same pressure or necessity.
I'm not forecasting the end of launches. But there will be a day where that model is going to fall down. Every model does. It could be ten or twenty years from now. Who knows? It could be next month.
But the time to build a business that's not reliant on product launches is when launches are working and you're still able to make money with them. Because then you have the time to make it work.
That's why I made that decision a little over a year ago. And I've taken a back seat when it comes to being one of the standard players. And that's okay. Because we've been working with other people, and doing bigger deals, that aren't the typical Internet marketing "frenzy" type of deals."

Welcome to the next lesson of your free report on how to generate thousands of super targeted leads from the major search engines.
In the last lesson, we mentioned that there are three technologies that when combined will completely revolutionize the way you advertise your business. For now we will talk about the first technology, which is at the heart of the system. This is all about key words and RSS news feeds. This technology will be divided into two lessons. One dedicated to key words and the next on RSS feeds. These concepts are very important and work together to start the targeted leads process. Key words are very important, because they dictate how targeted your leads are and how many of them you will pick up from the search engine. many people do not have a full understanding of them.
To find out the best keywords for your particular business, you need to get into the mind of your potential prospects and ask yourself this very important question. “If I was looking on Google and wanted information about “my” business, what would I type into the search box. Try and stay away from keywords like “home based business” or “work at home”. Try typing that into Google and see how many links come up. That is your competition. From Google Adwords, you could spend hundreds of dollars on those words per click, depending on your advertising budget. We will show you how to get great keywords and traffic from Google Adwords for a one time fee of less than $100 and keep getting them for life! That’s right a one time fee, gets you traffic from Google Adwords for a lifetime! More on that later.
There are many examples of good key words related to your business. If you are marketing a network marketing company based on getting business builders to sign up under you, try to resist the words like, how to make money and other words like that. Focus more on your product line and branding. For example, an Herbalife distributer might use the words “diet products” or “how to market diet products” or “healthy living products” or even “Shapeworks” (their brandname). There are many people looking for these products and don’t know how to find a distributor and are familiar with the brand name or the product name. Don’t forget the obvious when you are promoting a well known network marketing company. Even the word “Herbalife” would be a good keyword. If someone types in those words, you know they would be interested in hearing from you. Don’t you think you would be more likely to sign someone up who is looking specifically for that company as compared to someone just looking to “make money” on the internet and then you pitch them on Herbalife? Well, that is a no brainer.
Now I am only using Herbalife as an example. There are many more. Another example might be “legitimate businesses”. This is a great keyword for a distributor of a well known network marketing company like GDI or Traffic Wave. They have both been around a while and there are people doing well with them. So the best way to come up with good keywords is to sit yourself down at your computer and type in words for your business and see what comes up. Is what comes up similar to your business? Is there a lot of competition? Ask yourself if you would join a business if you saw an ad based on what you were looking for.
What keywords are used are extremely important to any marketer and worth gaining as much knowledge as you can concerning your particular business. One way to see how effective your words are is to take a peak at some of the businesses on our systems search page. I am one of the owners of a system called Leadgusher. My partner James Stone and I have developed this system as part of these technologies.
We have our own search engine that gets rotated on the major search engines. We have over 10,000 business on this site and each one has a capture page with keywords under their site. Go to the main site and look around. Look at the link entitled search engine. Every time you click on that link, a different business capture page comes up. This is because it gets rotated amongst the upgraded members.
This is one way they get their leads. Of course the better the keywords, the more leads they get. When one upgrades on this system, we give them help and support for their keywords, after they have given it a try. Practice makes perfect. The Two Paths to Persuasion
Want to know something exciting? Something that will blow your mind and change your life and relationships forever? How about this:
Despite the myriad approaches and brazen claims of countless persuasion gurus, there really are only two types of persuasion. One is very common, often works poorly, and produces mixed results. The other-the ‘secret of all great persuaders'-is much more rare, often works miraculously, and can produce astounding results!
Any practicing hypnotist or hypnotherapist knows that there are two ways to induce hypnosis: 1) a direct, authoritarian strategy known as the ‘paternal' approach, and 2) an indirect, permissive strategy known as the ‘maternal' approach. In sales as well, most professional salespeople recognize that you can take a direct, ‘assumptive' approach with customers, or a more indirect, ‘consultative' route. With persuasion, we find it also follows this ‘two path' format. Before we continue our ongoing exploration of rapport and the other elements of personal influence, let's take a moment to discuss the two fundamental approaches to persuasion itself. They are, respectively . . .
#1. Leveraging. In this strategy, the persuader attempts to present an undeniable logical and emotional case for why their ‘target' (the person being persuaded) needs to take a certain action in a certain way at a certain time. The promise of pleasure (for acting correctly), and the threat of pain (for acting incorrectly), may be overt or implied. When the target reaches threshold (enough pleasure for doing what you want them to do plus enough pain for doing what you don't want them to do) they will act in the way you want. A simple example would be a parent threatening their child to clean their room. The persuader (the parent) applies a lever (the threat of physical punishment) to get their target (the child) to act or think in a certain way (clean the room).
Leveraging is the most typical approach to persuasion, and although often apparently effective, it also comes with certain problems, the most serious one being that it is an ‘outside-in' strategy. In other words, the desired change is ‘impressed' upon the target individual from an external source. The individual themselves may have experienced no genuine shift in the way they feel, but disagreeing or avoiding action may have simply become too uncomfortable and so they exhibit compliance. What you see with leveraging as a strategy is that quite often when the lever has been released, the individual often reverts back to the old, undesired behavior.
#2. Induction. The second, and often much more effective, approach to persuasion is ‘induction'. The word induction is typically associated with hypnosis and the creation of a ‘trance' state. There are a lot of different definitions one can supply for the concept of trance. For our purposes here, let's think of trance as a focused state of mind where a person is inclined to believe, think, and behave in certain ways. A useful analogy might be that of ‘rooms in a house'. For instance, punching things is a somewhat odd behavior when one is in a kitchen. But if a person were in a workout room equipped with a punching bag, then the behavior of punching seems much more natural. Trances are like these rooms; While in a particular trance state, a person has access to a particular set of mental resources and is denied access to others, and that changes their typical behavior.
Now here's how this applies to persuasion.
The basic application of induction to persuasion involves these steps:
* Identify the trance/state you would like the person to be in.
* Identify the trance/state the person is already in.
* Create rapport by joining them in their trance/state.
* While maintaining rapport, gently guide them into the desired trance/state.
* Utilize suggestion and redirection to keep them there.
Of course, the most skilled persuaders know how to combine both leveraging and induction to achieve their desired outcomes.
